Backflow is the undesirable reversal of flow of water or other substances through a cross-connection and into the piping of a public water system or consumer’s water system. There are two types of Backflow: Backpressure and Backsiphonage.
A common reason for a loss of pressure on the supply side is due to an issue in the municipal system such as a break in a water main or a large amount of water used for firefighting. The pressure drop from this loss of water will suction up wastewater into the drinking water system. This is known as Backsiphonage.
If the pressure of the wastewater system increases above that of the fresh water system, it is called Backpressure. This can occur because of problems inside the sewer system, or a break along the sewer line that leads from your house. If there is already reduced pressure from the supply side, it will not require much rise in pressure from the sewer system to cause Backpressure Backflow.
A Backflow preventer is a means or mechanism to prevent Backflow. The basic means of preventing Backflow is an air gap, which either eliminates a cross-connection or provides a barrier to Backflow. The basic mechanism for preventing Backflow is a mechanical Backflow preventer, which provides a physical barrier to Backflow. The principal types of mechanical Backflow preventer are the reduced-pressure principle assembly, the pressure vacuum breaker assembly, and the double check valve assembly.
